In migraine patients with cardiovascular (CV) risk factors, including those with moderate to high CV risk, rimegepant for long-term acute treatment of migraine is associated with favourable safety and tolerability, post hoc subgroup analyses of a 52-week multicentre open-label safety study have shown.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) constitutes about 85% of all lung cancer cases.¹ Of those diagnosed with NSCLC in Hong Kong, approximately 13% are found to have stage III disease.² Prior to the advent of immunotherapy, the standard of care (SoC) involved concurrent chemoradiotherapy (cCRT) followed by active surveillance.³ However, outcomes have been poor, with most patients experiencing disease progression after CRT. This has resulted in a 5-year overall survival (OS) rate of 15–30% for stage III NSCLC.⁴

In patients with ≥1 year’s history of migraine and ≥6 monthly migraine days (MMDs), acute treatment of migraine with rimegepant 75 mg up to once daily as needed for up to 52 weeks is associated with reduced MMDs, with no increase in monthly tablet utilization and no evidence of medication overuse headache (MOH), a post hoc analysis of an open-label safety study has shown.

A 39-year-old female hospital porter presented with dyspnoea and Raynaud’s phenomenon in 2010, with no evidence of sclerodactyly. She tested positive for anti-ribonucleoprotein (anti-RNP) and anti–Scl-70 autoantibodies. High-resolution CT (HRCT) of the chest revealed bilateral ground-glass opacities, suggesting interstitial thickening or fibrosis. Echocardiography showed an elevated estimated right ventricular systolic pressure (RVSP) of 74 mm Hg. These findings, along with other defining features, supported a diagnosis of mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD), complicated by interstitial lung disease (ILD) and possibly pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).¹

HZ is a debilitating condition that poses a significant burden on patients’ quality of life and the economy and has a bidirectional relationship with cardiovascular disease (CVD). At the 28^th Hong Kong Medical Forum (HKMF), Professor Kai-Hang Yiu of the Department of Medicine, University of Hong Kong, presented an overview of the public health impact of HZ in high-risk patients with immunocompromised conditions or chronic diseases and discussed the long-term effectiveness of adjuvanted recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV) against HZ.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection is a common cause of acute lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD) and a leading cause of hospitalization in infants. In Hong Kong, the single-dose RSV prefusion F protein–based (RSVpreF) vaccine, indicated for active immunization of pregnant individuals at a gestational age of 32–36 weeks, is now available for prevention of LRTD and severe LRTD caused by RSV in infants ≤6 months of age. This article discusses the burden of RSV infections and the efficacy and safety of the RSVpreF vaccine specifically against medically attended severe RSV-associated LRTD in infants, which demonstrated an efficacy of 81.8 percent at 90 days after birth and 69.4 percent at 180 days after birth in a pivotal trial.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is an important cause of severe respiratory illness, often leading to hospitalization and/or death in older individuals. A bivalent (RSV A and RSV B) RSV prefusion F protein–based (RSVpreF) vaccine is now available in Hong Kong for prevention of lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD) caused by RSV in individuals ≥60 years of age. This article highlights the single-dose vaccine’s sustained protective efficacy through two full RSV seasons, with cumulative vaccine efficacy against RSV-associated LRTD with ≥3 signs or symptoms exceeding 80 percent.

The introduction of targeted biologic therapies has revolutionized the management of severe asthma, where clinical remission is now viewed as a realistic treatment goal. In an interview with MIMS Doctor, Professor Ken Ka-Pang Chan of the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, discussed updates in the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) 2024 Report that reflect recent research findings on clinical remission with biologic therapy. He further highlighted how tezepelumab, a first-in-class monoclonal antibody that targets thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), may help achieve this goal through its broad action on multiple downstream inflammatory pathways involved in asthma pathophysiology.
