การเสื่อมสภาพของระบบประสาทตามอายุที่เพิ่มขึ้นเป็นสิ่งที่หลีกเลี่ยงได้ยาก การลดความเสี่ยงของการเกิดโรคจึงเป็นสิ่งจำเป็น ซึ่งพบว่าการเสริม carnosine ให้ร่างกายส่งผลดีต่อการทำงานของสมอง โดย carnosine เป็น imidazole dipeptide ที่ร่างกายสร้างขึ้นได้เอง ประกอบด้วยกรดอะมิโน 2 ชนิด ได้แก่ β-alanine และ L-histidine เป็น free-radical scavenger ที่มีฤทธิ์เป็น antioxidant, antiglycation รวมทั้ง anti-inflammatory มีการศึกษาผลของ carnosine และ anserine ในรูปแบบอาหารเสริม (anserine/carnosine supplementation, ACS) ต่อความจำในผู้ที่อายุ 60 ปีขึ้นไป เปรียบเทียบกับยาหลอก พบว่า กลุ่มที่ได้รับ ACS สามารถรักษาการไหลเวียนโลหิตในสมองส่วน posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) ได้ดีกว่ากลุ่มยาหลอกอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ (p=0.0228)
