Monitoring
The
patient is advised to follow-up in order to assess their response to therapy,
if there is a need to alter or adjust the treatment and to monitor structural
ocular damage, as well as to provide reassurance. The frequency and extent of
follow-up will depend on the severity of the disease, therapeutic approach and
response to therapy.
Counselling
and Referral
Clinicians
should provide the patients with proper instructions for their therapeutic
regimens, as well as caution them about LASIK, as this may worsen their dry eye
condition. Patients may be referred to appropriate specialists if there were
other causes of underlying conditions that would contribute to having dry eye. Patients
should also be educated about the chronic nature of the disease and its
process. The patients’ compliance, understanding of the disease and risks for
structural changes should also be periodically reassessed.
