Laboratory Tests and Ancillaries

With regards to lab tests, testing must be tailored to the patient’s complaints and risk factors. Fasting blood glucose or HbA1c, lipid profile, testosterone assay may be done to evaluate the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis; urinary microscopy may be done if necessary. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is measured before initiating and at regular intervals during testosterone therapy. Lastly, additional tests may be considered in patients with specific signs and symptoms (eg total PSA, prolactin and leutenizing hormone).
