Differential Diagnosis

Other etiologies of microcytic hypochromic anemia include the following:

  • Beta-thalasemia: sTfR >100 mg/L, normal TIBC and FEP, normal or increased ferritin, serum iron, TS, and RDW, normal or decreased hemoglobin, decreased MCV
  • Sideroblastic anemia: Normal TIBC and MCV, normal or increased ferritin, serum iron, and TS, increased RDW
  • Acute chronic inflammation: Normal sTfR and RDW, normal or increased ferritin, increased FEP, normal or decreased serum iron, MCV and reticulocytes, normal or slightly decreased TS, slightly decreased TIBC, decreased hemoglobin
