Screening

Dyslipidemia Screening1

All healthy adults >20 years old should undergo dyslipidemia screening to document baseline lipid levels and to evaluate ASCD risk. Most healthy adults should be screened every 4 to 6 years. More frequent and earlier assessments are needed for all patients with CVD risk factors and those with a family history of premature CVD (definite myocardial infarction or sudden death prior to age 55 years in father or other male first-degree relatives, or before age 65 years in mother or other female first-degree relatives). Children and adolescents should be screened between the ages of 9 to 11 years and 17 to 21 years and repeated every 5 years. Selective screening may be done for children with a strong family history of dyslipidemia or CVD at ages 2 to 8 years and 12 to 16 years. Children who have obesity or diabetes may need frequent screening.

1Recommendations for screening initiation and interval may vary between countries. Please refer to available guidelines from local health authorities.

Please see Dyslipidemia Screening Tests under Laboratory Tests and Ancillaries.
