Men with premature ejaculation cope by having repeated sex in a day

Patients with premature ejaculation (PE) tend to engage in multiple turns of sexual intercourse within a single day in an attempt to compensate for their first unsatisfactory sexual encounter, suggests a study.

“Moreover, the majority of patients with PE here studied hold a negative attitude toward using precoital masturbation as a coping strategy for symptoms,” the investigators said.

This study included both patients with PE and those without PE to analyse their sexual behaviours and attitudes through detailed interviews and questionnaires. The main outcomes assessed included perceived intravaginal ejaculatory latency time recording; Premature Ejaculation Diagnostic Tool score; and sexual frequency, attitudes, and behaviour log.

Overall, 182 young patients with PE (mean age 31.2 years) and 92 individuals without PE (mean age 30.7 years) participated in this study. Of the participants, 53.3 percent with PE and 17.4 percent without PE reported engaging in several sexual intercourse sessions within a single day in the past month.

PE patients who had several intercourse sessions showed a better performance during the second attempt but performed poorly when compared with those without PE.

The specific scores for the first attempt versus with the second attempt in participants with PE versus without PE were as follows: intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (2.4 vs 4.8 vs 9.9; p<0.001); Premature Ejaculation Diagnostic Tool (14.9 vs 12.7 vs 5.2; p<0.001); satisfaction (2.9 vs 3.1 vs 3.7; p<0.001).

Notably, more than half of the patients (57.1 percent) held a negative attitude toward precoital masturbation. Their reasons included a reduced sexual desire (21.2 percent), the belief that masturbation is harmful (17.6 percent), concerns about erectile function (15.7 percent), fatigue (9.8 percent), and others (35.3 percent).

“Engaging in multiple intercourse sessions within a day is more common among the young PE population, and using precoital masturbation as a coping strategy is not universally applicable among patients with PE,” the investigators said.
