Differential Diagnosis

Other causes of persistent hyperglycemia include:

  • Transient or stress hyperglycemia which may occur during severe illness or infection in patients without diabetes mellitus
  • Conditions affecting the pancreas (eg cystic fibrosis, hereditary hemochromatosis, pancreatic cancer, chronic pancreatitis)
  • Endocrine disorders resulting in impaired secretion of insulin (eg pheochromocytoma, acromegaly, Cushing syndrome, glucagonoma)
  • Drug-induced insulin resistance (eg Phenytoin, Pentamidine, glucocorticoids, statins, estrogen, interferons)
  • Genetic defects affecting β-cell function and insulin action
  • Other conditions such as type 1 diabetes mellitus, gestational diabetes mellitus, maturity-onset diabetes of youth (MODY), diabetes insipidus, and thyroid disorders
