Other conditions that should be ruled out in the diagnosis of dyspepsia include:

  • Chronic abdominal pain
  • Chronic peptic ulcer disease (PUD)
  • Consider the possibility of a cardiac, biliary or pancreatic disease. Biliary pain is characterized by acute and severe upper abdominal pain that is episodic and not colicky, lasting for an hour or more
  • Gastritis
  • Gastroesophageal and other abdominal malignancy
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Gastroparesis
  • H pylori infection
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The link with pain and bowel movement is indicative of IBS
