While many view COVID-19 as a mild illness, the virus is still common and a more frequent cause of illness requiring hospitalisation than other common respiratory viruses like influenza and the respiratory syncytial virus. Unfortunately, immunity from previous COVID-19 vaccinations and infections may not offer sufficient protection against newly emerging strains.
