The following conditions should be ruled out in the diagnosis of cellulitis or erysipelas:

  • Contact dermatitis
  • Deep venous thrombosis
  • Drug reaction, vaccination site reaction
  • Erythema migrans
  • Gas gangrene
  • Herpes zoster
  • Insect bite
  • Lipodermatosclerosis
  • Lymphedema
  • Necrotizing fasciitis
  • Rheumatologic diseases: Septic arthritis, septic bursitis, osteomyelitis, acute gout
  • Thrombophlebitis
  • Toxic shock syndrome
  • Vasculitis
