Anxiety disorders are disorders wherein the patient experiences uncontrollable fear or anxiety with behavioral disturbances that affects normal functioning.
In generalized anxiety disorder, the patient experiences persistent and excessive anxiety and worry about various domains, including work and school performance.
Generalized anxiety disorder as described in DSM-5-TR is an excessive anxiety and worrying about a number of events or activities occurring in most days for at least 6 months; symptoms cause clinically serious distress or deterioration in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
When deciding which medications for anxiety disorders to offer, take into account the age of the patient, treatment response, risks for accidental overdose and deliberate self-harm, tolerability, patient's previous experience of treatment with individual drugs (eg adherence, effectiveness, side effects, experience of withdrawal syndrome), patient's preference, and costs of therapy.
