Secondary causes of constipation that should be ruled out include: 

  • Anal sphincter spasm or abnormal sphincter tone
  • Idiopathic functional causes
  • Immobility
  • Mass lesions
  • Medications (eg anticholinergic, antacids, iron supplements)
  • Metabolic, endocrine and neurogenic disorders
  • Poor intake
  • Structural causes (eg anal fissures, anal stenosis)
  • Systemic abnormalities (eg volume depletion, infection, ileus)
