Otitis media is a general term used to describe inflammation of the middle ear which may be caused by an acute infection.
The symptoms are usually nonspecific but may include otalgia, otorrhea with or without fever, diminished hearing, dysequilibrium, which commonly are unilateral; there may also be symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection (eg cough, nasal discharge or stuffiness, sore throat).
Diagnosis of acute otitis media (AOM) requires a history of acute onset of signs & symptoms, signs & symptoms of middle ear inflammation, & confirmation of middle ear effusion (MEE).
Pharmacotherapy includes symptomatic therapy with analgesics, and antibiotic therapy (eg. Amoxicillin/High-dose Amoxicillin, Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, second and third generation cephalosporins, etc.).
