GLP-1 RA use does not affect oesophageal function in patients with T2D

Use of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA) demonstrates no significant effect on oesophageal function in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D), according to a study.

Researchers retrospectively evaluated 132 patients with T2D undergoing high-resolution manometry (HRM) between December 2022 and October 2024 and compared GLP-1 RA users with nonusers. They also obtained HRM diagnoses per the Chicago Classification 4.0 and reflux testing results. Those with prior foregut surgery and known conditions related to dysmotility (eg, scleroderma) were excluded.

The research team did the comparisons using χ2 and Mann-Whitney U tests for categorical and continuous measures, respectively.

Of the patients, 29 (69.0 percent) were female. The most common GLP-1 RA used was semaglutide (n=24, 57.1 percent). The median A1c was similar between users and nonusers (6.6 percent for both).

Most GLP-1 RA users (64.3 percent) had a normal HRM. No significant between-group differences were observed in overall HRM diagnoses (p=0.07). GLP-1 RA type or dose was not associated with oesophageal motility diagnoses.

Among patients who underwent formal reflux testing, the rates of gastroesophageal reflux disease did not significantly differ between users and nonusers (p=0.51).

“These results suggest that patients may continue GLP-1RAs when undergoing oesophageal testing and are not at significantly increased risk for impacts on oesophageal motility diagnosis compared with nonusers,” the researchers said.
