Oxidative balance score inversely linked to advanced CKM risk

Higher levels of oxidative balance score (OBS) are associated with a lower risk of advanced cardiovascular‒kidney‒metabolic (CKM) syndrome, reveals a study.

Furthermore, cardiovascular indexes emerge as potential mediators of this association, laying the groundwork for future longitudinal and interventional studies to explain possible causal pathways, according to the authors.

This study used data from NHANES focusing on adults with CKM, who were then categorized into early and advanced CKM. The relationship between OBS levels (total, dietary, and lifestyle) and advanced CKM was explored using a multivariable logistic regression model.

The authors analysed the mediating effects of cardiovascular indexes, atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), and cardiac metabolic index (CMI). They also used the Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) in machine learning to interpret the importance of indexes’ components.

Higher OBS levels showed an inverse association with the risk of advanced CKM. Specifically, OBS score ≥28 was associated with a 36-percent reduced risk relative to scores ≤16. AIP >0.56 and CMI >0.57 also correlated with an increased risk of advanced CKM.

In mediation analysis, AIP and CMI potentially mediated 0.68 percent and 4.08 percent of the association between OBS and advanced CKM risk, respectively.

In addition, SHAP stressed the importance of carotene and niacin.
