Women with PMOS at high risk of ASCVD

The risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) events increases by more than fourfold in the presence of polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS), according to a retrospective study from the US.

Researchers used data from Clinformatics Data Mart Database and identified females ages 18–50 years who had a diagnosis of PMOS and no previous history of ASCVD. Females with PMOS were matched to those without PMOS, with matching performed according to age and month of PMOS diagnosis.

The main outcome of ASCVD events was defined as a composite of coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, or peripheral artery disease.

The analysis included 413,450 females in the PMOS group (mean age 31.1 years) and 2,067,250 females in the reference group (mean age 31.1 years). The prevalence of traditional cardiovascular risk factors was higher in the PMOS group than in the reference group.

In a Cox proportional hazards regression model, PMOS was associated with a more than fourfold higher risk of ASCVD events (adjusted hazard ratio, 4.40, 95 percent confidence interval, 4.23–4.58).

The findings highlight the importance of increased awareness of cardiovascular disease risk among PMOS patients and their healthcare providers to ensure early delivery of preventive interventions.
