Academy of Medicine of Malaysia marks 60 years of medical leadership with Diamond Jubilee celebration

Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat presenting the 26th Tun Dr Ismail Oration.The Academy of Medicine of Malaysia (AMM) officially celebrated the 60th Anniversary Diamond Jubilee, marking 6 decades of advancing medical excellence, specialist education, ethical practice, and healthcare in Malaysia.
Held in conjunction with the 59th Malaysia–Singapore Congress of Medicine (MSCM) and the 37th Annual Scientific Congress of the Malaysian Oncological Society (ASCOMOS 2026), the celebration brought together medical professionals from across the region under the theme “Together: Advancing Excellence in Cancer Care.” The Congress, hosted by AMM’s College of Oncologists, was held from 3 to 5 July 2026 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. In his welcoming address, Professor Dato’ Dr Hanafiah Harunarashid, Master of AMM, said the Diamond Jubilee is not only a celebration of AMM’s rich history but also a reaffirmation of its commitment to the future of healthcare.
“For 60 years, the Academy has served as a beacon of medical excellence, ethical practice and professional leadership. As we celebrate this Diamond Jubilee, we honour the remarkable contributions of our Fellows and Members while reaffirming our commitment to advancing specialist education, fostering collaboration and improving healthcare for future generations,” he said.
He also highlighted AMM’s enduring partnerships with the Academy of Medicine, Singapore, and the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, which continue to strengthen regional collaboration in specialist training, medical education and healthcare development.
A highlight of the opening ceremony was the conferment of fellowship and membership, officiated by AMM’s Royal Patron, His Royal Highness Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, Sultan of Perak Darul Ridzuan, recognising distinguished medical professionals for their dedication and contributions to the profession.
The ceremony also featured two prestigious lectures. The 26th Tun Dr Ismail Oration, titled “Judicial Responsibility in Shaping the Future Architecture of Good Governance,” was delivered by Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, while the 8th T J Danaraj Lecture, titled “A Student’s Tribute to TJ Danaraj and Musings of a Nonagenarian,” was presented by Dato’ Dr Mahmood Merican. Both lectures offered insightful perspectives on leadership, governance, professionalism and the future of medicine.
Delivering the Diamond Jubilee Address, Professor Dato’ Dr Hanafiah Harunarashid spoke on the future of medicine, highlighting the transformative impact of artificial intelligence, robotics, precision medicine, genomics, regenerative therapies and digital health on healthcare delivery.
“The next 50 years of medicine and surgery will be unlike anything humanity has witnessed before. While technology will continue to transform healthcare in extraordinary ways, one fundamental truth must remain constant—medicine is, and always will be, a profoundly human endeavour. Technology may enhance our capabilities, but compassion must continue to guide our purpose,” he emphasised.
“As the Academy commemorates its Diamond Jubilee, we remain steadfast in our mission to uphold the highest standards of medical professionalism while embracing innovation, strengthening regional partnerships and preparing future generations of specialists to serve the nation,” he said.
